General teeth cleanings are performed at routine preventive care visits and are a vital part of maintaining your oral health. During a professional cleaning:
- A dental hygienist uses a tool called a “Cavitron” which sprays warm water and vibrates off the hard build up off the teeth. Then the hygienist uses “scalers” to gently scrape off any tartar or plaque that remains on your teeth, in between your teeth, and along the gum line; once these sticky substances form on your teeth, it is next to impossible for you to remove them with brushing and flossing at home, so having a professional hygienist clean them off your teeth is important in preventing the decay and disease that they can cause
- Once your teeth are free from tartar, a high-powered toothbrush and a slightly gritty toothpaste/polish is used to remove any leftover materials on your teeth and polish them
- The hygienist will then floss deep between your teeth to finish the cleaning process
- Plenty of opportunities to rinse with water will be provided throughout all these steps so you are comfortable
